2004 IDEAS Boston Speaker Rodney Brooks says a startup should make a 3D printer which can produce tooling.

Brooks, who invented the human-like robot Baxter to automate manual tasks in factories, spoke with reporters and analysts at the South Boston headquarters of his firm Rethink Robotics. Brooks told the Boston Business Journal that a 3D printer from Somerville-based Formlabs is being used to make custom fingers for the robot.

Formlabs cofounder Maxim Lobovsky is one of the 2013 IDEAS Boston speakers. Registration opens soon for the event, which is taking place on Wednesday, October 30 at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
