First IDEAS Boston Speaker: Antibiotics Damage DNA

July 9, 2013

Jim Collins

2004 IDEAS Boston Speaker Jim Collins, the very first speaker recruited for this conference, is featured in the Boston Globe for his work looking at how drugs can affect our cells.

Tests on mice suggest that common antibiotics cause mitochondria to spew out factors that damage DNA, proteins, and other crucial components.

“That’s not killing the cell or causing a lot of damage, but it’s causing some damage,” Collins told the Globe.

The findings were published last week in Science Translational Medicine.
